Julian House

Okay. In inspiration today I write about an artist whose work, if you are a music obsessive like me, will definitely be found in your home. His name is House, Julian House, and he is responsible for a broad spectrum of work in music, publishing, arts & advertising. Working across all media, from print to film to sound design. A combination of old-school craft and technical skill are the foundation of his design approach. I like to think of his artwork as being the BBC Radiophonic Workshop of the visual world.

Julian House has been placed in the head honcho role of Art Director for a tonne of musical luminaries, of which include; Broadcast, Primal Scream, Stereolab and Cavern Of Anti Matter.

His work is largely collage-based, and have influential rubbings from the likes of Peter Saville, Saul Bass and Max Ernst to William S. Burroughs, Bryon Gysin, H. P. Lovecraft, and Lewis Carroll. Here is what House has to say about his influences;

the ‘pulp’ end of things which still informs me today, as much as classic design… Strange old vinyl LPs, paperback books, found ephemera….

A multi-talent, the flippin’ man also releases music under the alias of The Focus Group, and he also co-owns a record label called Ghost Box. Are you at all inspired yet? You’d better be…

With few releases, they are always eagerly anticipated. The label’s first release by Belbury Poly was back in 2004, and their latest will be The Invisible World of Beautify Junkyards. The label is the brainchild of two Welshmen, one being, Julian House and the other Jim Jupp. The label originally sold hand-packaged CDRs, which, of course, always beautiful in the sound department but outside too being adorned with House’s artwork.

The stuff that comes out of Ghost Box shares a common aesthetic, both in design and sound. Whilst they holding hands and singing the Maypole Song, Ghost Box’ cast members include; Belbury Poly, The Advisory Circle, Mount Vernon Arts Lab, Pye Corner Audio, The Soundcarriers, and Julian Houses own The Focus Group.
